Eaglevlei Wine Estate is situated in the well-known Stellenbosch wine region of South Africa. Their best wines include Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
Clarise Sciocatti-Langeveldt, the winemaker at Eaglevlei Wine Estate, has been using Flexcubes for four years and now has 78 in service. She says a cube’s positive attributes “far outweigh” those of a barrel.
“In today’s economic climate, producers have to look seriously at managing production costs to remain competitive in the marketplace. Smaller producers have problems with space, availability, cost of labour, and service providers pushing up costs.”
“We have to look at innovative ways to keep these costs under control. By using cubes, I can still produce high quality wines at a lower cost.”
Clarise said Flexcubes gave her better control over the use of oak. “I can change the profiles and amount annually, depending on the needs of our market, and still be cost-effective. I’m not stuck with a certain type of oak for about three years.”
“My wines in cubes are definitely more fruit-forward and less reductive than wines in barrels or steel tanks. I use BarriQ high-quality barrel oak and in my experience the wines perform better than wine in a traditional barrel.”
